Ernest Tubb

I Cared For You More Than I Knew

by Ernest Tubb
Ernest Tubb

Biography:

Ernest Dale Tubb (February 9, 1914 – September 6, 1984), nicknamed the Texas Troubadour, was an American singer and songwriter and one of the pioneers of country music. His biggest career hit song, "Walking the Floor Over You" (1941), marked the rise of the honky tonk style of music. In 1948, he was the first singer to record a hit version of "Blue Christmas", a song more commonly associated with Elvis Presley and his mid-1950s version. Another well-known Tubb hit was "Waltz Across Texas" (1965)

C G7
You say it’s better if we drift apart

C
Although you see that it’s breaking my heart

G7
How can you leave me so lonely and blue

C
Knowing just how I’ve been counting on you

G7
We once was so happy it all seems a shame

C
And do you feel like that I am to blame

G7
Dear if I failed you oh please tell me now

C
And then maybe we can patch it up somehow

G7
Now that I’ve lost you the whole world seems wrong

C
I don’t see how I can face it alone

G7
For I’ve tried so hard to do right by you

C
And really I cared for you more than I knew

G7
When I first met you I heard people say

C
That there’d come a time when you’d treat me this way

G7
I did not believe them I just let them rave

C
Determined to stick by you clear to the grave

G7
It would have been better had we never met

C
Then I would not have so much to forget

G7
If I’d only dreamed dear that there’d come this day

C
Five years I could have used better some way

C G7
You say it’s better if we drift apart

C
Although you see that it’s breaking my heart

G7
How can you leave me so lonely and blue

C
Knowing just how I’ve been counting on you
