Ernest Tubb

Driftwood On The River

by Ernest Tubb
Ernest Tubb

Biography:

Ernest Dale Tubb (February 9, 1914 – September 6, 1984), nicknamed the Texas Troubadour, was an American singer and songwriter and one of the pioneers of country music. His biggest career hit song, "Walking the Floor Over You" (1941), marked the rise of the honky tonk style of music. In 1948, he was the first singer to record a hit version of "Blue Christmas", a song more commonly associated with Elvis Presley and his mid-1950s version. Another well-known Tubb hit was "Waltz Across Texas" (1965)

C G7
I'm just drift-wood on the river floating down the tide

C
I don't care where this old river carries me

F
I keep drifting just because my heart is broken inside

G7 C
And I'm tired of wishing for what can not be

G7
I may meet some bit of drift-wood lost same as I

C
Share a hand shake and a tender tear or two

F
But It's always good luck now we got to say good-bye

G7 C
I must wander on to keep my rendezvous

G7
Though I drift through town and city I can never stay

C
For I find no place to call my home sweet home

F
I don't ask for help or pity I just go my way

G7 C
All I'm praying for is peace to dream alone

G7
I'm just drift-wood on the river and I'm drifting on

C
Till this weary river meets the deep blue sea

F
Where the deep blue sea may help me to forget someone

G7 C
Yes the careless one who has forgotten me

G7
In my heart I don't feel bitter over what has been

C
I feel sorry for the one I must forget

F
And instead of being someone with the world to win

G7 C
I'm just drift-wood on the river of regret
