Richard Shindell

So Says The Whippoorwill

by Richard Shindell
Richard Shindell

Biography:

Richard Shindell (born 3 August 1960, Lakehurst, New Jersey) is an American folk singer. While dividing his time between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and New York's Hudson Valley, Shindell is a writer whose songs paint pictures, tell stories, and juxtapose ideas and images.

Shindell's songwriting often involves storytelling from a first-person point of view: for example, from an INS officer and illegal immigrant in "Fishing", to a World War II soldier in "Sparrows Point"

Richard Shindell - So Says The Whippoorwill

## NOTE: ~ = walk-down from F to Dm ##

CAPO: 2nd Fret

INTRO: C F C F G C F C F

C F C F
The change could happen any day
G C
So says the whippoorwill
F C
It hangs 'round for the seeds I leave
F Dm G F
Out on the windowsill
C Dm C
"Be-free-you-fool, be-free-you-fool"
F ~ Dm G C
She sings all afternoon
F C F
Then, as if to show me how it's done
G C F C F
She leaps into the blue

C F C F
And the change could happen any day
G C
So say all the guards
F C F
In the prison I have built around
~ Dm G F
My solitary heart
C Dm C
I tell myself that I'm alright
F ~ Dm G C
That it's not so bad a place
F C F
The truth is, that I'm just scared to death
G C F C F
Of walking through that gate

C F C F
And the change could happen any day
G C
So say my true love's eyes
F C
They see into my shadows
F ~ Dm G F
With their swe-et, forgiving light
C Dm C
She smiles and says, "Come on, let's go
F ~ Dm G C
Let's stroll the boulevard.
F C
It's such a shame to waste the night
F G C
Just sitting in the dark"

INSTRUMENTAL: C F C Dm C F ~ Dm G C G F C F G C

F C F
And the change could happen any day
G C
Or so says Father Brown
F C
I listen for that still small voice
F ~ Dm G F
But I just can't make it out
C Dm C
Beneath the constant whispering
F ~ Dm C G
Of the devil that I know
C G F C
But who would I be, if I believed?
F G C
Who am I, if I don't?

F C F
And the change could happen any day
G C
So said the mountaineer
F C
Before he turned to face his cliff
F ~ Dm G
With----out a trace of fear
F C Dm C
Yodel-ay-he-oh, yodel-ay-he-hoo
F ~ Dm C G
He sang right up until
C G F C
He caught sight of that open blue
F G C
And became a whippoorwill
C G F C
He caught sight of that open blue
F G C
And became a whippoorwill
