Tiamat é uma banda pioneira do gothic metal europeu. Começou como uma típica banda de Death metal de Stockholm (Suécia), a lá Entombed, Unleashed e Dismember; foi gradualmente "evoluindo" para se tornar um dos pioneiros do Gothic Metal, incorporando de Metallica à Fields of the Nephilim na sua sonoridade (considerada única).
