Bill Morrissey

Biografia:

Bill Morrissey (November 25, 1951 – July 23, 2011) was an American folk singer-songwriter from New Hampshire. Many of his songs reflect the harsh realities of life in crumbling New England mill towns.

Hailing from New Hampshire in the northeastern United States, singer-songwriter Bill Morrissey wrote about everyday life on the fringes, both geographical--e.g., fading mill towns, railyards, prisons--and interpersonal--e.g., instant infatuation with an unknown woman at a bar.

Intro: D - G - A

D G
Well here comes Parks and he’s found another bottle
G A
He tips it up like a trumpet; he takes a drink and passes it on
D G
And every man ‘round the fire takes a course on the bottle
G A
It ain’t much, it ain’t good, but it’ll get us through ‘til dawn

Chorus

G A D Bm
Don’t the freight yards sound like a drunk in a metal shop?
G A
I can’t believe it gets this cold in Barstow
D G
And I can’t believe I pissed my twenties away
G A
Well if ya take me back this time, baby I promise you I’ll stay

D G
Then Parks takes another drink and he starts to sing off key
G A
There’s not a man big enough ‘round the fire to shut him up
D G
And in the cold morning he’s sayin’, “Hey Okie tell Arkie, Texas found a job in California
A
And everybody around the fire cracks up

Chorus

G A D Bm
Don’t the freight yards sound like a drunk in a metal shop?
G A
I can’t believe it gets this cold in Barstow
D G
And I can’t believe I pissed my twenties away
G A
Well if ya take me back this time, baby I promise you I’ll stay

D G
And then Parks hands me the bottle he says, “I’m goin’ to Tucson”
G A
Hold up all winter at the Sally, if I can
D G
I don’t mind the praying and I don’t mind saying
G A
I could listen forever to that Sally brass band

G A D Bm G A

D G
And then Parks starts laughing hard, but he doesn’t make a sound
G A
He grabs the bottle back from me and kills the last of the wine
D G
And in the fire’s glow I can see his eyes and they shine like brake lights
G A
And I’m grateful I cannot see mine

Chorus

G A D Bm
Don’t the freight yards sound like a drunk in a metal shop?
G A
I can’t believe it gets this cold in Barstow
D G
And I can’t believe I pissed my twenties away
G A
Well if ya take me back this time, baby I promise you I’ll stay

D G A D
