The Black Seeds fue formada por Barnaby Weir y Daniel Weetman en el año 1998 en la ciudad de Wellington, Nueva Zelanda.
Su música se define como una fusión de dub, funk, afrobeat y un poco de soul que acompañan un reggae roots bien clásico.
Sus letras expresan un mensaje diferente pero que abarca varias temáticas. Experiencias de vida, amor, muerte, apatía, relaciones que sus integrantes atraviesan y han atravesado pero siempre con cierto optimismo y vibración positivia.
