[Verse 1]
D
Oh, the fox travelled out one moonshiney night,
A
Prayed that the moon might shine very bright,
A
For he had a long journey to go that night
D
Before he could get to the town-o,
A D
Town-o, town-o,
D
He had a long journey to go that night
D
Before he could get to the town-o.

[Verse 2]
D
Oh, the fox ran along 'til he came to a farm,
A
And there he found ducks and geese in alarm;
D
Said, the fattest of you all is gonna grease my back
D
Before I leave this town-o,
D
Town-o, town-o,
D
The fattest of you all is gonna grease my back
D
Before I leave this town-o.

[Verse 3]
D
Well, old Mrs. Flipper-Flopper jumped out of bed,
D
And out of the window she poked her long head,
Em
Saying, jump up John, the gray goose is gone,
D
And the fox will soon be out of the town-o,
D
Town-o, town-o,
Em
Jump up John, the gray goose is gone,
D
And the fox will soon be out of the town-o.

[Verse 4]
D
So John took his gun and ran to the hill,
· A
And there he blowed it loud and shrill;
A
You may blow, said the fox, it is good music still,
D
But I will soon be out of the town-o,
D
Town-o, town-o,
D
Blow, said the fox, it is good music still,
D
But I will soon be out of the town-o.

[Verse 5]
D
Well the fox ran along 'til he came to his den,
A
And there he found young ones nine or ten.
D
Oh, lawsy massa daddy, you had better go again,
D
For we think you had a lucky journey,
D
Journey, journey,
D
Lawsy massa daddy, you had better go again,
D
We think you had a lucky journey.
