[Verse 1]
A
Brigham Young was a Mormon bold,
E
And the leader of the roaring ram,
A E A
And the shepherd of the flock of fine tub sheep
E
And a passel of pretty little lambs;

[Verse 2]
E
And he lived with his five and forty wives

In the city of the Great Salt Lake,
D
Where they breed and swarm like hens on a farm
E A
And cackle like ducks to a drake.

[Chorus]
A
Brigham, Brigham Young,
E A
It's a miracle he survives,
E D
With his roaring rams, and his pretty little lambs
E A A
And his five and forty wives.

[Verse 3]
A
Number forty-five's about sixteen,
A E
Number one is sixty and three,
A
And among such a riot how he ever keeps 'em quiet
E
Is a downright mystery ' to me,

[Verse 4]
E A
For they cackle and claw and they jaw, jaw, jaw,
E
Each one has a different desire,
A E
It would aid the renown of the best shop in town
A
To supply them with half they require.

[Chorus]
A
Brigham, Brigham Young,
E A
It's a miracle he survives,
E D
With his roaring rams, and his pretty little lambs
E A A
And his five and forty wives.

[Verse 5]
A
Brigham Young was a stout man once,
E
But now he is thin and old,
A
And I'm sorry to relate, there's no hair upon his pate,
E
Where he once wore a covering of gold.

[Verse 6]
E
For his oldest wife won't wear white wool,

The young ones won't take red,
A
And in tearing it out and taking turn about,
E
They have torn all the wool from his head.

[Chorus]
A
Brigham, Brigham Young,
E A
It's a miracle he survives,
E D
With his roaring rams, and his pretty little lambs
E A A
And his five and forty wives.

[Verse 7]
A
Now his youngest wives sing psalms all day,
E
The old ones all sing songs,
A D
And among such a crowd he had it pretty loud,
E
They're as noisy as Chinese gongs.

[Verse 8]
E A
When they advance for a Mormon dance,
E
He is filled with the direst alarms,
A E
For they're sure to spend the night in a tabernacle fight
A
To see who has the fairest charms.

[Chorus]
A
Brigham, Brigham Young,
E A
It's a miracle he survives,
E D
With his roaring rams, and his pretty little lambs
E A A
And his five and forty wives.

[Verse 9]
A
Well, there never was a house like Brigham Young's,
E A
So curious and so queer,
D
For his wives were double and he had a lot of trouble,
E A
And it gained on him year by year.

[Verse 10]
E A
Now he sits in his state and bears his fate

In a sanctified sort of way;
D
He has one wife to bury and one wife to marry
A
And a new kid born every day.

[Chorus]
A
Brigham, Brigham Young,
E A
It's a miracle he survives,
E D
With his roaring rams, and his pretty little lambs
E A
And his five and forty wives.
