Nació y creció en Harlem, Nueva York. Su nombre es una combinación del nombre de su padre; Kenneth, músico de jazz afroamericano y de ferviente religiosidad; y el de su madre Eveliss; una diseñadora de moda de orígenes puertoriqueños-asiáticos.
Desde su infancia cantó en coros de gospel y tocaba el violín, el piano y el saxofón. Abandonó su hogar con tan sólo trece años, pero continuó los estudios hasta los dieciséis en el "Fiorello H.
