Tomahawk inició su andadura cuando Mr. Bungle visitó Nashville (Tennessee), a cuyo concierto fue el guitarrista de The Jesus Lizard, Duane Denison. Al finalizar el show, este fue al backstage a saludar a Mike Patton; alguien los presentó; entonces Mike Patton le dijo a Duane: “Hey, me gusta lo que haces. ¿Por qué no haces un proyecto? Yo tengo mi disquera, IPECAC, por si te interesa. Ya sabes que tienes las puertas abiertas". Duane le dijo que le encantaba la idea y que en un futuro le tendría noticias.
