by Gordon Bok
Gordon Bok

Biografía:

Gordon Bok stands out among the various artists that can be lumped into the "Traditional Folk" category. Born in Pennsylvania, he moved to Camden, Maine and it was there in coastal Maine that Bok was influenced by sea-faring culture and its music. He released his first album in 1965 and in 1970 signed to Folk-Legacy records, where he released a number of solo albums, as well as many collaborations with Ann Mayo Muir and Ed Trickett. In 1990 he began releasing music on his own label, Timberhead Music.

[Verse 1]
B G#m
This old mandolin is carved out of Pine
C#m F# C#m
Given to me by a hobo down the line
F#
Willed to me with these last words
B G#m C#m F#
"Before I cross over, I'll show you some chords"

[Verse 2]
B G#m
This old mandolin is made out of earth and of stone
C#m F#
If the sound of the railroad leaves you feeling all alone
G#m F# B F# G#m F#
This old mandolin will take a hobo back home

[Verse 3]
B G#m
This old mandolin is sure full of sand
C#m F#
It'll play out-of-tune if there's a cop on the train
C#m Ebm G#m B G#m E
Sing you the rhythm of the Superchief out of St. Paul
F#
And that ain't all

[Verse 4]
F#7 G#7
This old mandolin'll make a young girl open her window
C#m F#
Like a warm breeze on a rainy night
C#m F#
And like a hex-sign on a barn
G#m F# B F# G#m F#
This old mandolin will keep a hobo from harm
