High Barbary

by Gordon Bok
Gordon Bok

Biografía:

Gordon Bok stands out among the various artists that can be lumped into the "Traditional Folk" category. Born in Pennsylvania, he moved to Camden, Maine and it was there in coastal Maine that Bok was influenced by sea-faring culture and its music. He released his first album in 1965 and in 1970 signed to Folk-Legacy records, where he released a number of solo albums, as well as many collaborations with Ann Mayo Muir and Ed Trickett. In 1990 he began releasing music on his own label, Timberhead Music.

[Intro]
Bm A Bm D
Bm A G F#m Bm D Em7 Bm

[Verse]
A Bm
There were two lofty ships from old England come
D
Blow high, blow low, and so sailed we
Bm A G F#m
One was the Prince of Luther and the other Prince of Wales
Bm D Em7 Bm
All a-cruising down the coast of the High Barbary

[Verse]
A Bm
"Aloft there! Aloft there!", our bully bosun cried
D
Blow high, blow low, and so sailed we
Bm A G F#m
Look ahead, look astern, look to weather and alee
Bm D Em7 Bm
All a-cruising down the coast of the High Barbary

[Verse]
A Bm
"There's naught upon our stern, sir, there's naught upon our lee"
D
Blow high, blow low, and so sailed we
Bm A G F#m
"But there's a lofty ship to windward and she's sailing fast and free"
Bm D Em7 Bm
All a-cruising down the coast of the High Barbary

[Verse]
A Bm
"Then hail her! Oh, hail her!", our gallant captain cried
D
Blow high, blow low, and so sailed we
Bm A G F#m
"Are you a man-of-war or a privateer?" cried he
Bm D Em7 Bm
All a-cruising down the coast of the High Barbary

[Verse]
A Bm
"Oh no, I'm not a man-o'-war nor privateer", cried he
D
Blow high, blow low, and so sailed we
Bm A G F#m
"But I'm a salty pirate all a-looking for my fee"
Bm D Em7 Bm
All a-cruising down the coast of the High Barbary

[Verse]
A Bm
Then broadside and broadside, a long time they lay
D
Blow high, blow low, and so sailed we
Bm A G F#m
'Til at last the Prince of Luther shot the pirates' mast away
Bm D Em7 Bm
All a-cruising down the coast of the High Barbary

[Verse]
A Bm
With cutlass and gun, well, we fought for hours three
D
Blow high, blow low, and so sailed we
Bm A G F#m
The ship it was their coffin and their grave it was the sea
Bm D Em7 Bm
All a-cruising down the coast of the High Barbary

[Verse]
A Bm
"Oh quarter! Oh, quarter!", those pirates they did cry
D
Blow high, blow low, and so sailed we
Bm A G F#m
But the quarter that we give 'em was to sink 'em in the sea
Bm D Em7 Bm
All a-cruising down the coast of the High Barbary

[Verse]
A Bm
There were two lofty ships from old England come
D
Blow high, blow low, and so sailed we
Bm A G F#m
One was the Prince of Luther and the other Prince of Wales
Bm D Em7 Bm
All a-cruising down the coast of the High Barbary
