The Boats Of Peters River

by Gordon Bok
Gordon Bok

Biografía:

Gordon Bok stands out among the various artists that can be lumped into the "Traditional Folk" category. Born in Pennsylvania, he moved to Camden, Maine and it was there in coastal Maine that Bok was influenced by sea-faring culture and its music. He released his first album in 1965 and in 1970 signed to Folk-Legacy records, where he released a number of solo albums, as well as many collaborations with Ann Mayo Muir and Ed Trickett. In 1990 he began releasing music on his own label, Timberhead Music.

[Intro]
D A D

[Verse]
G D
Not a boat in Peter's River or in all Saint Mary's Bay
G D E7 A
The fishermen in rubber boots are staying home today
D A D G A
Hanging out the laundry or hang out in the store
G D A D
And the Little Boats of Newfoundland are idle on the shore
G D A D
The men of Peter's River are just barely getting by
G D A D A D
And the boats of Peter's River have their bottoms to the sky

[Verse]
G D
The wives of Peter's River are taking up the slack
G D E7 A
The fisheries have ended, and it's never coming back
D A D G A
Sell a little knitting, set some broody hens
G D A D
No sooner does a hard day end, another one begins
G D A D
The wives of Peter's River are too strong to sit and cry
G D A D A D
And the boats of Peter's River have their bottoms to the sky

[Verse]
G D
The boys of Peter's River are bright as boys can be
G D E7 A
Their eyes are on the highway instead of on the sea
D A D G A
Where their fathers went before them, is not where they must go
G D A D
And the fate of Peter's River is not for us to know
G D A D
The boys of Peter's River are too young to wonder why
G D A D A D
And the boats of Peter's River have their bottoms to the sky

[Verse]
G D
The storms of Peter's River have pounded us for years
G D E7 A
Crashing in the harbour and smashing up the piers
D A D G A
We've ridden out these storms before by shooting at our boats
G D A D
But we know this storm is different and we cannot stay afloat
G D A D
There's no nets in Peter's River, laying out to dry
G D A D
And the boats of Peter's River have their bottoms to the sky
G D A D
There's no nets in Peter's River, laying out to dry
G D A D
And the boats of Peter's River have their bottoms to the sky
