Gordon Bok

Cannery Shed

by Gordon Bok
Gordon Bok

Biografía:

Gordon Bok stands out among the various artists that can be lumped into the "Traditional Folk" category. Born in Pennsylvania, he moved to Camden, Maine and it was there in coastal Maine that Bok was influenced by sea-faring culture and its music. He released his first album in 1965 and in 1970 signed to Folk-Legacy records, where he released a number of solo albums, as well as many collaborations with Ann Mayo Muir and Ed Trickett. In 1990 he began releasing music on his own label, Timberhead Music.

[Intro]
Am D G

[Chorus]
D G
I worked all my life in the cannery shed
C D G
And if I'm dying or you think I'm dead
G
Don't bury my bones, but put me instead
C D G
In a can in the cannery shed

[Verse]
D G
The cannery shed perches over the river
C D G
Where the winter winds blow, we freeze and we shiver
G
When the boss comes around, I might have to give her
C D G
My opinion of the cannery shed

[Chorus]
D G
I worked all my life in the cannery shed
C D G
And if I'm dying or you think I'm dead
G
Don't bury my bones, but put me instead
C D G
In a can in the cannery shed

[Verse]
D G
We chop off the heads and we chop off the tails
C D G
Scoop out the guts and we throw 'em in the pails
G
We won't get a rest till the next schooner sails
C D G
From the dock at the cannery sheds

[Chorus]
D G
I worked all my life in the cannery shed
C D G
And if I'm dying or you think I'm dead
G
Don't bury my bones, but put me instead
C D G
In a can in the cannery shed

[Verse]
D G
There's no time to talk and there's no time to linger
C D G
Better move sharp or you might lose a finger
G
It'd turn your stomach if you knew everything
C D G
That's been canned in the cannery shed

[Chorus]
D G
I worked all my life in the cannery shed
C D G
And if I'm dying or you think I'm dead
G
Don't bury my bones, but put me instead
C D G
In a can in the cannery shed

[Verse]
D G
Now, La Faye went away and he wrote me a letter
C D G
I tucked it up high in the sleeve of my sweater
G
I slipped and it fell and it ended in the shredder
C D G
Got canned in the cannery shed

[Chorus]
D G
I worked all my life in the cannery shed
C D G
And if I'm dying or you think I'm dead
G
Don't bury my bones, but put me instead
C D G
In a can in the cannery shed

[Verse]
D G
Now, the cannery boy, he's a very happy fella
C D G
If he gets him a girl from the town of Stella
G
I would if I could, but I'm not going to tell ya
C D G
What goes on behind the cannery shed

[Chorus]
D G
I worked all my life in the cannery shed
C D G
And if I'm dying or you think I'm dead
G
Don't bury my bones, but put me instead
C D G
In a can in the cannery shed
