(G) Now old Jake was a cowboy he'd worked his whole life on the © range
And he could rope, and he could ride with any (D man just half his (G) age
Old Jake was my hero and (C) me I was just a green kid
And I (D) prayed that someday I could do all the things old Jake (G) did
Well we sat around the bunk house one (C) cold and lonely winter's night
Just chewin' and talkin' and smokin' by the coal oil (G) light
Well old Jake had been aweful quiet (C) that evenin' and he stared hard and (D) long
He said (C) young puncher you goin' to remember me after I'm (D) gone

(G) Whatever happens to old cowboy hero’s like (C) me
A broken down part of a (D) man I used to (B) be
Will I be forgotten or live on in your (C) memory
Whatever happens to (D) old cowboy heros like (C) me
(G) It's been a long time and oh (C) how the years fade away

(D) Well I stopped by the bunk house were me and old Jake used to (G) stay
They say Jake died about ten years ago and they buried him out there on the plains
(G) Old friend you might be gone but (C) your memory always stays the same
(G) Whatever happens to old cowboy hero’s like (C) me
A broken down part of a (D) man I used to (G) be
Will I be forgotten or live on in your (C) memory

Whatever happens to (D) old cowboy heros like (C) me
(G) Whatever happens to old cowboy hero’s like (C) me
A broken down part of a (D) man I used to (G) be
Will I be forgotten or live on in your (C) memory
Whatever happens to (D) old cowboy heros like (C) me

Part written by me for a funeral of my hero.

(G) What ever happens to old cowboy heroes like (C) me
You’ll always live on (D) forever in my (G) memory
I’ll always remember the things the way (C) they used to be
You’ll always and (D) forever be a hero to (G) me
