[Verse]
E D E A
She opened up the letter from Nashville, Ten- nessee
D E A
He said, "Hon, they like my music, the songs I wrote for you and me"
D A
The boys and me just cut a record and it could hit the charts before too long
E A G D A
So it's gonna be a while 'til I can come back home

[Chorus]
D A
Yes, I'm gonna be a country star and everyone will know my name
E A G D A
Ah, you know I love those bright lights when I step on stage to sing
D A
I'll be travlin' 'round the country with a big bus and a band
E
So just keep the home fires burnin' while I'm gone
A D A
And I'll get back home when I can

[Verse]
E D E A
She said, "Hun, I hear your record, aw, they play it every- day
D E A
And everybody really likes it, so I guess your on your way
D A
But darling, please re- member we all need you here at home
E A G D A
And the kids all miss their daddy, so don't be gone too long"

[Chorus]
D A
Yes I know that your a country star and everybody knows your name
E A G D A
And I know you love those bright lights when you step on stage to sing
D A
Just remember we all love you and don't get blinded by the light
E
We'll just keep the home fires burnin' while you're gone
A G D A Bb Ab Eb Bb
You know we pray for you each night

[Verse]
F Eb F Bb
After six long months of goin', I guess the road just finally took it's toll
Eb F Bb
'Cause his songs had lost all meaning and he felt so all a- lone
Eb Bb
Then one night in Jackson, he went out on stage to play
F Bb Ab Eb Bb
And the crowd stared at disbelief at the words he had to say

[Chorus]
Eb Bb
I don't want to be a country star, it ain't the way I thought it'd be
F Bb Ab Eb Bb
Well, it took me such a long time to know that it ain't the life for me
Eb Bb
'Cause the days can get so lonely and the nights can get so long
F Bb Eb Bb
Lord, I think it's a- bout time, this country star went home

F Bb Ab Eb Bb
Yes, I think that it's a- bout time, this country boy went back home -----
