Pearls Before Swine

There Was A Man

by Pearls Before Swine
Pearls Before Swine

Biography:

Pearls Before Swine was an American psychedelic folk band formed by Tom Rapp in 1965 in Melbourne, Florida, United States. The group signed to ESP Disk and recorded One Nation Underground, a fairly successful release that was followed by the anti-war Balaklava (1968). In the next few years, Rapp often referred onstage, not quite seriously, to the group as "the house band for the SDS" (Students for a Democratic Society). They continued to release albums and to tour until the 1970s

I think the song is originally played without a capo starting on an A# in stead of a G -
it is, however, easier to play this way:

Ph to Em7 on the Em in the end of each verse.

Capo 3rd

G Am G C
There was a man came to our town
C D Em
He wore a suit of red
G Am G C
He memorized with secret eyes
G D Em D
That he hid away in his head

C D G Em
He had a scar upon his head
C G D
Where there used to be a crown
G Am G C
But he sold his robes at the five and ten
G D Em D
And lived on the edge of town

G Am G C
That fall he showed us a magic leaf
C D Em
That he could change to snow
G Am G C
He bought it partly with his grief
G D Em D
And partly with his soul

C D G Em
He scattered seeds in the alley way
C G D
He never seemed to rest
G Am G C
And when you went to ask him why
G D Em D
All he ever said was yes

G Am G C
He made a swan from waving grass
C D Em
Beside a crystal shore
G Am G C
And a sunrise spun from broken glass
G D Em D
And many things wondrous more

C D G Em
But then his hands began to burn
C G D
When he heard the news from the war
G Am G C
When we cannot find each other he said
Am D Em D
Then we can't run away any more

G Am G C
Next day with tears along his face
C D Em
He passed us on the hill
G Am G C
No one thought to ask him to stay
G D Em D
And he knows that we never will

G Am G C
There was a man came to our town
C D Em
He wore a suit of red
G Am G C
He memorized with secret eyes
G D Em D
That he hid away in our head

Em
