Whiskeytown

The Battle And The War

by Whiskeytown
Whiskeytown

Biography:

Whiskeytown was an alt-country band from Raleigh, North Carolina founded in 1994 and fronted by Ryan Adams along with violinist Caitlin Cary. The band produced a number of albums before ultimately parting ways in 2000.

Other members of the group included guitarists Mike Daly and Phil Wandscher, bassist Steve Grothmann and drummer Skillet Gilmore.

Adams and Cary have publicly talked of reuniting Whiskeytown on multiple occasions, as recently as 2005, but as of yet, nothing new has materialized.

[Intro]
(3/4 time)
Cadd9 / G / Dsus4 / G

[Verse]
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
When I am buried, don't visit my grave.
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
God cannot save me from the sins I've embraced.
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
Pay your respects to that old liquor store
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
Where I won the battle, but I lost the war.
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
You mine for silver and I pan for gold.
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
You keep yours hidden and all mine is sold.
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
You tell the truth and I lie and I barter,
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
And I drink and I cry and I pass out at night.

[Break]
Cadd9 / G / Dsus4 / G
(For the last bar, hold the G, and hammer each beat from the 2nd to 3rd fret on the low E.)

[Verse]
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
I've always cheated though I've never stolen.
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
I've wanted things that you ain't never thought of.
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
So lay your respects at the gamb-a-ling score
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
Where I won the battle, but I lost the war.
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
They always told me when death came my sins would be
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
Cast out, forgotten, laid to rest with my body.
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
Pay your respects to that old church house door
Cadd9 G Dsus4 G
Where I won the battle, but I lost the war.
