The Church

Under The Milky Way

by The Church
The Church

Biography:

The Church is an alternative rock band which formed in Sydney, Australia in 1980. Initially linked in with neo-psychedelia acts of the period, their music later became largely defined by the interplay of guitarists Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes coupled with the abstract lyrics of bassist/singer Steve Kilbey. Their debut album, Of Skins and Heart (1981), earned them their first radio hit "The Unguarded Moment". They were originally signed to EMI's Parlophone label

Seen a few tabs but none are correct. Two acoustic guitars play the song but it works
on one, with or without a capo. If playing with a capo, put it at the fifth fret and play
shapes for the verse:

Am7 or
Am C6add13 Fmaj7 G
E-0-----0--------0-----2---|
B-0-----3--------0-----3---|
G-0-----0--------0-----2---|
D-2-----0--------2-----0---|
A-2-----2--------3---------|
E-0-----0--------0---------|

The same chords without a capo

Am7 or
Am C6add13 Fmaj7 G Or (G)
E-5-----5--------5-----7---| 7--|
B-5-----8--------5-----8---| 8--|
G-5-----5--------5-----7---| 7--|
D-7-----5--------7-----5---| 9--|
A-7-----7--------8-----x---| 10-|
E-5-----5--------5-----x------------| x

And if you're bad at barre chords these work fine:

Am A7sus4 Fmaj7 G Or (G)
E-0-----0(3)-----0------3--| 7-|
B-1-----3--------1------0--| 8-|
G-2-----0--------2------0--| 0-|
D-2-----2--------3------0----------| x
A-0-----0--------x------2----------| x
E-0-----x--------x------3----------| x

All of these sound good to me. For the chorus you just do Fmaj7 to G twice. For the
solo (apparently a violin with effects) do C, G and Am. If you're playing on a capo just do
as a G shape. You can fit the melody into the chords if you like, the notes are just:

e----------------------------------------------|
B----------------------------------------------|
G----------------------------------------------|
D----------------------------------------------|
A--3-3-3-2-3-5---------------------------------|
E--------------3-3-3-3-3-0h5-5-5-5-5-5-5-7-7-7-|

Or something to that effect. And that's basically the song, apart from some of the lead
Here are the lyrics. Enjoy and please rate.

Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty,
Sound of their breath fades with the light.
I think about the loveless fascination,
Under the milky way tonight.

Lower the curtain down in memphis,
Lower the curtain down all right.
I got no time for private consultation,
Under the milky way tonight.

Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.
Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.

And its something quite peculiar,
Something thats shimmering and white.
Leads you here despite your destination,
Under the milky way tonight
(chorus)
Under the milky way tonight.
