Standard tuning: E A D G B E

Riff 1 & 2 are actually played on keyboard and possibly banjo/e-banjo in the
original, along to the backing chords on guitar (see above RIFF 1 & 2), but it
still sounds good played on the guitar.

C G D C G D
The first thing I remember was the friction in the room

C G D Em G D
And that brown spinet piano that never played in tune

C G D C G D
The cruel impatient tyrant, the frustrated malcontent,

C G D Em D
The need to find the pieces, and the absence of cement

C G C G D
No one ever told me about the right way to love

C G D
And no one ever showed me what we're supposed to be made of

C G C G D
So don't be too forthright about what you think that I should be

C G D G
And I'll willingly accept your low opinion of me

//RIFF 1//

C G D C G D
The last thing I remember was the slamming of the door

C G D Em G D
And the resonance of my imperfection broke the silence once more

C G D C G D
The selfish angry bastard who doesn't want to hear

C G D Em D
I tried to learn compassion you turned the other ear

C G C G D
No one ever told me about the right way to love

C G D
And no one ever showed me what we're supposed to be made of

C G C G D
So don't be too forthright about what you think that I should be

C G D G
And I'll willingly accept your low opinion of me

C G D C G D
The worn out broken record who doesn't fit the mold

C G D C G D
The righteous independent, the mood so harsh and cold

C G C G D
Momma never told me about the right way to love

C G D
And daddy never showed me what we're supposed to be made of

So don't be too forthright about what you think that I should be
