guitar chords by joshuaRobot
lyrics by someone else on the internet

standard tuning

intro:
D Bm C F 2x

Verse 1:
E Bm
It was just as I was leaving
A G
Throw some change up on the bar
E G
She caught my eye through the swinging door
D A
She was standing out by my car
E Bm
I said I thought you moved to the city girl
A G
No I never did find the time
E G
Ive been wasting away at my sisters place
D A
Just north of the county line

Verse 2: //same chords as first, no lyrics for first half
Well I gazed out across the gravel lot
To the road that leads to town
Thinking all the ways that I broke your heart
Yeah, thinking how it all went down

Chorus:
E Bm
And I said its a strange thing to see you now
D A G D
Ive been running so long on the same old ground
E Bm
Gonna rattle these chains till the morning light
D A
If I ever loved once, you know
G D
I never loved right by
E Bm A E
you ooooooh ooooooh oooooooh
Bm D A E
oooooh ooooooh ooooooh oooooooh

//Bm D A E also works for the first set of "ooohs" (instead of E Bm A E)
//but i like the D to E sound better coming from the end of the chorus

//Those are all of the chords. the rest of the song uses the same progressions

Verse 3:
So we go up to the turnpike
Where the whole world turns to sky
I took her hand, but she drew away
Like a bird getting ready to fly
She said I ain’t so young, and I met someone
He’s a rock that just won’t roll
And I gotta find out, if you only love once
Or does love keeṗ coming to call

Chorus:
Cause it’s a strange thing to see you now
I’ve been running so long on the same old ground
Gonna rattle these chains till the morning light
If I ever loved once, you know
I never loved right by you

Intro

Verse 4:
There’s a half built house in the potter’s field
All the timbers are turned to gray
There’s an old brown dog living on the porch
I seen him just the other day
Well I laid those planks, and I drove those nails
But it never did satisfy
And a man must forfeit all he owns
For a glimpse at the reason why

Chorus:
It’s a strange thing to see you now
I’ve been running so long on the same old ground
Gonna rattle these chains till the morning light
If I ever loved once, you know
I never loved right

And it’s a strange thing to see you here
If the world don’t mine, yeah you better leave the keys
Gonna rattle these chains till the morning light
If I ever loved once, you know
I never loved right by you
