Beans on Toast

Biography:

Beans On Toast (aka Jay MacCallister) is a British folk singer from Essex, UK, who rose to out of the UK folk scene in 2005. He is well known for his self-deprecating and honest songwriting, which openly deals with the topics of politics, drugs and love. He has six studios albums and has traditionally released a new record each year on his birthday, 1 December.

Jay claims the songs he writes 'have the same chords' and 'sound like Billy Bragg'. His close friend Frank Turner mentions Jay in many of his songs: I Knew Prufock Before He Got Famous

I come from a village called Rayne next to a town called Braintree, near
C
the city of Colchester in middle of the Essex County.

C F G
A semi detached house with three cars on the drive. Mum used to work at a
C
swimming pool and dad on a building site.

C F
My brother used to sell a little bit of hash but never enough to get caught;
G C
he used to rag it around the town at night in a mark two ford escort.

C F G
Six years of Notley high school got me four GCSEs its not the greatest
C
education but its good enough for me.

C F G
And on sunny Sunday afternoons we go down to southend, peter pans
C
playground it was called back then.

C F G
We d all walk down the sea front to the pier for fish and chips. I used to
C
hang around in arcades playing Mortal Kombat.

C F G
So ill sing a song for Southend on radio 2, I think they want me to make fun
C
of it but I can only tell the truth.

C F G
so if youve never been to Essex dont be so quick to knock it because the
C
reality TV show dont know everything about it.

C F
Well weve all heard jokes about Essex girls and how people think they are
G C
Easy, loud mouth blonde and stupid and baby in the belly.

C F G
Back in Braintree college I was in love with a girl called Claire smart
C
little vegetarian as pretty as the flower in her hair.

C F G
on sunny Sunday afternoons we go down to south end, we bunk the train to
C
the sea side to hang out with our friends.

C F G
The rollercoasters tiny its not like Alton towers but with the right ones
C
sitting next to you, you go round and round for hours.

C F G
So ill sing a song for Southend on radio 2, I think they want me to make fun
C
of it but I can only tell the truth.

C F G
so if youve never been to Essex dont be so quick to knock it because the
C
reality TV show dont know everything about it.

C F G
And in my line of work I visit lots of different places. I iron out the
C
clichés and try and understand the creases.

C F G
its good to have some character it makes you who you are and Id rather be
F C G C
form Essex than be from Buckinghamshire
