Turnpike Troubadours

Evangeline

by Turnpike Troubadours
Turnpike Troubadours

Biography:

Turnpike Troubadours is an American country music group from Oklahoma founded in 2005.

The band, whose name is derived from the bumpy Oklahoma toll-roads and their hard lived folk singing heroes, are proof that isolation can be the mother of originality. Cutting their teeth in roadside dance halls and honky-tonks has made a serious impact on the band’s musical style, which walks the line between Woody Guthrie and Waylon Jennings. “Bossier City,” the band’s debut album, is testament to the small towns in which they were raised.

[Note] I don't know proper notation for measures/timing, but each |chord| is a 4-4 measure,
so the first F/C and C of the intro/chorus/instrumental are 8 counts each in total.

[Intro]
| F/C | F/C | C | C | F/C | F/C | G | G | C | C/B | Am | F/C | C | G | C |

[Verse 1]
Am
Lookin’ back well I see you
F/C
With eyes that shouldn't be so blue
C G
Clearer than the calm before the rain

Am
So alive it wasn't fair
F/C
To live without a single care
C G
I loved you and you felt for me the same
Dm7 F/C
So beautiful that words could not define
Dm7 G
Sweeter than the Lord's communion wine

[Chorus]
F/C C
Evangeline can't you see I'm sorry
F/C G
Can't you hear my tears ringin’ through the night
C C/B Am F/C
I wait in hell between these bed sheets
C G C
And pray to God for morning light

[Instrumental]

[Verse 2]
Am
And winter came and blood ran cold
F/C
as ever present sleet and snow
C G
Outside of a December window pane

Am
This house would never be our home
F/C
Hand in hand we walk alone
C G
I thought the sun would never shine again
Dm7 F/C
And the oldest violin could never whine
Dm7 G
A melody as sorrowful as mine

[Chorus]
F/C C
Evangeline can't you see I'm sorry
F/C G
Can't you hear my tears ringin’ through the night
C C/B Am F/C
I wait in hell between these bed sheets
C G C
And pray to God for morning light

[Verse 3]
Am
Now I've seen your face a thousand times
F/C
And nightmares runnin’ through my mind
C G
It hurts, just to pretend

Am
But the devil fell and so have I
F/C
From perfect grace you faced the sky
C G
Never thought a love like this would end
Dm7 F/C
Now your words they cut right through me like a knife
Dm7 G
I gave my love and now I take my life

[Chorus]
F/C C
Evangeline can't you see I'm sorry
F/C G
Can't you hear my tears ringin through the night
C C/B Am F/C
I wait in hell between these bed sheets
C G C
And pray to God for morning light
C C/B Am F/C
I wait in hell between these bed sheets
C G C
And pray to God for morning light
