Taylor Giacoma

The Joker

by Taylor Giacoma
Taylor Giacoma

Biography:

Singer-songwriter-pianist Taylor Giacoma is quickly becoming known on the indie music scene for a distinctive style that has been described both as folky pop and poppy folk - and is probably neither. Originally learning to sing and play piano by ear and later classically-trained, her music is both easily accessible and remarkably complex. Her lyrics are unusually intellectual and highly narrative, taking the listener on uniquely intimate and yet wonderfully universal journeys of love, loss, and perseverance.

Cm Ab
If the movers and shakers

Fm Cm
Were all at the table

Fm Bb
And the low cards were willing

Fm G
And the queen she was able

Cm Ab
Would you just hide your aces

Fm Cm
Away up your sleeve

Fm Bb
And wait for the jacks

Fm Bb
And the kings to take leave

Fm
Or would you for once in your life

Bb
Play the game

Fm Bb
And raise all the stakes

Fm Bb
And risk your good name

Would you play yours face up

Fm Bb
And face front at the lineup

Fm Bb
Without counting your diamonds

Fm G
Or hoarding your hearts up

Cm Ab
Could you once in your life

Fm Cm
Just go way too far

Fm Bb
And show all the kingdom

Fm Bb
The joker you are

Said the man to the dealer

Fm Bb
Are they stacked in my favor

Fm Bb
How is my hand

Fm Bb
And what should I wager

I've little left to lose

Fm Bb
And I'm fresh out of aces

Fm Bb
I can't see their cards

Fm Bb
And I can't read their faces

Eb
Said the dealer to the man

Bb Eb
There's a lot on the table

Ab Eb
So play what you can

Bb
And bet what you're able

Eb Ab
'Cause it's more than a game

Bb Eb
And there's more here at stake

Ab Eb
Than the cards that you play

Bb
Or the bets that you make

And beware of the king

Fm Bb
Lest he force you to choose

Ab Eb
'Cause he doesn't know

Fm G
What you win if you lose

Cm Ab
So I'd play all I can

Fm Cm
And I'd bet all I got

Fm Bb
And I'd leave the table knowing

Fm G
That I had given it my best shot

Cm Ab
'Cause son this is the game

Fm Cm
Yeah, and these are the cards

Fm Bb
So play all of yours

Fm Bb
Like the joker you are
