Steve Earle: Ashes to Ashes

Chorus: Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust

Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust

Verse 1:
Em
A long time ago, before the ice and snow

Em C Em
There were giants, that walked this land

Em
Each step they took, the mighty mountains shook

C Em
And the trees took a knee, and the seas rolled in

Em
Then one day, they say the sky gave way

C Em
And death rained down, it made a terrible sound

Em
There was fire everywhere, and nothin was spared

C Em
That walked on the land, or flew through the air

D Em D C
When it all was over, the slate wiped clean with a touch

Em
There God stood, and he saw it was good

Em C Em
And he said, "Ashes to Ashes and Dust to Dust"

Chorus:
Em
Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust

Em
Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust

Verse 2:
Em
The sea gave birth, and it crawled up on the dirt

C Em
And stood up, and took a look around

Em
Said "I'm the next big thing, and the gift that I bring

Em C Em
comes directly from God, this ain't no holdin me down"

Em
So he crowned himself King, Now no one remembers his name

Em C Em
But the seed that he sowed, took the show on the road

Em
There was blood on their hands, and a plague on the land

Em C Em
They drew a line in the sand, and made their last stand

Em D Em D C
They said "God made us in his image, and it's in God that we trust

Em
When asked about the men, that had died by their hands

EM C Em
They said "Ashes to Ashes and Dust to Dust"

Chorus:
Em
Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust

Em
Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust

Solo:

Em C Em C Em D Em D C Em C Em

Verse 3:

Em
Now, nobody lives forever

C Em
Nothin stands, the test of time

Em
Oh, you heard'em say "Never say Never"

Em C Em
Ah but it's always best, to keep it in mind

Em
That every tower, ever built tumbles

Em C Em
No matter how strong, no matter how tall

Em
Some day, even great walls crumble

Em C Em
And every idol ever raised, falls

Em D Em
And someday, even man's best laid plans

Em D C
Will lie twisted, and covered in rust

C Em
When we've done all that we can, but it slipped through our hands

Em C Em
And it's "Ashes to Ashes and Dust to Dust"

Chorus:

Em
Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust

Em
Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust
