[Verse 1]
F Dm
Was a cold winters night not a star was in sight
Fm C
And the North wind came howling down the line
F
Near his sweetheart so dear stood a brave engineer
F
Beyond them stood poor old Number Nine.

[Verse 2]
Dm
Well she kissed him goodbye, tears in her eye
C
But the joy in his heart he could not hide
F Dm
For his whole world was right when she told him that night
Fm
That tomorrow she'd be his blushing bride.

[Verse 3]
C F
Oh the wheels hummed a song as the train rolled along
C
Black smoke came pouring down the stack
F
And the headlights a-gleam seemed so bright in his dream
F
For tomorrow that he'd be comin' back.

[Verse 4]
F
Oh he sped around the hill, his brave heart stood still
C
For the headlights were shining in his face
F
And he whispered a prayer as he threw on the air
F
For he knew this would be his final race.

[Verse 5]
F
In the wreck he was found lying there on the ground
C
He asked them to raise his weary head
F
As his breath slowly went this message he sent
F
To the maiden who thought she would be wed.

[Verse 6]
C
"There's a little white home that I bought for our own
C
I dreamed we'd be happy, by and by
F
But I leave it to you for I know you'll be true
F
When we meet at the Golden Gate, goodbye."...
