[Verse 1]
G D
I can hear the whistle blowing
G
High and lonesome as can be
C G
Tonight the rain is softly falling
D G
And its falling just for me

[Chorus]
D G
Looking back along the road I've traveled
D G
The miles could tell a million tales
C G
Each year Lord, like some rolling freight train,
D G
Is cold as starlight on the rails

[Verse 2]
D
I think about my home and family
G
My house and all the things it means
C G
The black smoke trailing out behind me
D G
Is like a string of broken dreams

[Chorus]
D G
Looking back along the road I've traveled
D G
The miles could tell a million tales
C G
Each year Lord, like some rolling freight train,
D G
Is cold as starlight on the rails

[Verse 3]
G D
Now if you live out on the highway
G
You're like some clock that can't tell time
C G
And if you spend your life just rambling
D G
Your like a song without a rhyme

[Chorus]
D G
Looking back along the road I've traveled
D G
The miles could tell a million tales
C G
Each year Lord, like some rolling freight train,
D G
Is cold, cold as starlight on the rails
