Robbie Fulks

Ill Trade You Money For Wine

by Robbie Fulks
Robbie Fulks

Biography:

Robbie Fulks is an alt country artist originally from Raleigh, North Carolina but is a longtime Chicago, Illinois resident. He has been active for many years and is still recording and performing music. Fulks is known for his disdain of mainstream modern country and the country music industry, as exemplified by his scorching rebuke of Nashville titled "Fuck This Town." His live performances feature improvised rearrangments of his original songs, off-the-cuff musical humor, and covers of songs by Michael Jackson and Cher, among others.

Capo 6 to play along with the recording.

The first three Em chords shift to an Em7 on the way to the Am.
I hit a G (note, not the whole chord) right before the Am as well.

[Intro]
Em Am Em Am Em Am G D Em

[Verse]
Em Am
Corn in the crib won’t turn your dollar green
Em Am
A dollar won’t get you high
Em Am
Some days a drop is all a body needs
G D Em
Some days the bottle drains dry

[Chorus]
Em Am
Pockets of change don’t drive my worry down
Em Am
Diamonds don’t make me shine
Em Am
It’s a short life and a long time underground
G D Em
I’ll trade you money for wine

[Instrumental]
Em Am Em Am Em Am G D Em

[Verse]
Em Am
I’ve seen this town from a long black Lincoln, boys
Em Am
Back when copper was king
Em Am
Ten years I stood on the same street corner, boys
G D Em
I never want for a thing

[Chorus]
Em Am
Pockets of change don’t drive my worry down
Em Am
Diamonds don’t make me shine
Em Am
It’s a short life and a long time underground
G D Em
I’ll trade you money for wine

[Instrumental]
Em Am Em Am Em Am G D Em

[Verse]
Em Am
Wild were the nights when I was rolling, boys
Em Am
No hunger unsatisfied
Em Am
Feared was my name in Elko County, boys
G D Em
Now they just walk on by

Em Am
The banker, he spares a quarter for my cup
Em Am
His trouble’s deeper than mine
Em Am
That way of life, boys, there ain’t gold enough
G D Em
I’ll trade you money for wine

[Instrumental]
Em Am Em Am Em Am G D Em

[Verse]
Em Am
See how the rain washes the sulfur dust
Em Am
Off to the wide blue sea
Em Am
Freed from the rock, the copper flies to where
G D Em
No miner ever may see

Em Am
Shallow your cares, in vain your industry
Em Am
So says the wide blue sea
Em Am
I never burdened God on your account
G D Em
Don’t waste your prayers on me

[Interlude]
Em Am Em Am Em Am G D Em
Em Am Em Am Em Am G D Em

[Verse]
Em Am
I’ve seen a man of wealth and family
Em Am
Scrimp till his hair’s gone grey
Em Am
Laid in the ground just like I’m gonna be
G D Em
He might have drunk it away

[Chorus]
Em Am
Pockets of change don’t drive my worry down
Em Am
Diamonds don’t make me shine
Em Am
It’s a short life and a long time underground
G D Em
I’ll trade you money for wine
