Robbie Fulks

Cigarette State

by Robbie Fulks
Robbie Fulks

Biography:

Robbie Fulks is an alt country artist originally from Raleigh, North Carolina but is a longtime Chicago, Illinois resident. He has been active for many years and is still recording and performing music. Fulks is known for his disdain of mainstream modern country and the country music industry, as exemplified by his scorching rebuke of Nashville titled "Fuck This Town." His live performances feature improvised rearrangments of his original songs, off-the-cuff musical humor, and covers of songs by Michael Jackson and Cher, among others.

[VERSE I]
E A
Well, just beyond Virginias southern border
E B
Is a land that I am happy to call mine
E A
And I was raised in a house of brick and mortar
B E
In the red clay hills of central Caroline
E A
Now the corn crop there is hardly worth a mention
E B
And the cattle farms are fine but not the best
E A
Its this little leaf we borrowed from the indians
B E
That keeps our state a notch above the rest

[CHORUS]
A E
The Georgia peach is fair, Kentucky beyond compare
A B
Alabamas grand, The state not the band
E A
Now the south she has her diamonds, And every one is great
E B E
But North Carolina is a cigarette state.

[VERSE II]
E A
Now the folks in our hometown sure had the habit
E B
They smoked the best home grown the whole year round
E A
They knew what a good time was and how to have it
B E
Because that was a cigarette town
E A
Our neighbour Frank was no high bred man of letters
E B
But he made an honest living off the land
E A
And he put away three packs a day or better
B E
Because he was a cigarette man

[CHORUS]
A E
The Georgia peach is fair, Kentucky beyond compare
A B
Alabamas grand, The state not the band
E A
Now the south she has her diamonds, And every one is great
B B E
But North Carolina is a cigarette state.

[CHORUS SOLO]
A E A B E A B E

[VERSE III]
E A
I took up with a pretty thing from Nashville
E B
Loved her more than even I told her so
E A
She took it between her fingers nice and natural
B E
And sucked it to the filter like a pro
E A
So I gave her a ring and from her pa I swiped her
E B
She gave me a boy I'm happy to call mine
E A
Chain smokes cools and I go out for diapers
B E
In a red brick house in central Caroline

[CHORUS]
A E
The Georgia peach is fair, Kentucky beyond compare
A B
Alabamas grand, The state not the band
E A
Now the south she has her diamonds, And every one is great
B B E
But North Carolina is a cigarette state.

[OUTRO]
E B E
And North Carolina is a cigarette state
