Beneath The Southern Cross

by Patti Smith
Patti Smith

Biography:

Patricia Lee "Patti" Smith (born December 30, 1946) is an American singer, poet and visual artist who was a highly influential component of the New York punk rock movement, particularly with her 1975 début album 'Horses'. Called the "Godmother of Punk", she integrated the beat poetry performance style with three-chord rock. Smith's most widely known song is "Because the Night", which was co-written with Bruce Springsteen and reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978.

Song information: the song's signature meter is 12/8. BPM is around 100. Listen to the
song for the strumming pattern and accents (first chord of the bar is louder than the
others). Mostly the pattern consists of downstrokes, but there are variations. Give
attention to the rhythm.
Play the first chord of the bar fully, the other chords only the 'higher sounding' ones.

Chord voicings:
D: x00232
Asus4: x00230
G: xx0033

D en G actually have other names (D/A, G/D), but I call them D and G for readability of
the chord chart.
