I Came Around

by Murder By Death
Murder By Death

Biography:

Murder by Death is an American five-piece indie rock/death country band from Bloomington, Indiana. Their name is derived from the 1976 Robert Moore film of the same name.

Murder by Death released its first studio album (Like the Exorcist, but More Breakdancing) in 2002, and has since released seven more studio albums. Intro: F

F A#
Cars lined up the street
Dm F
A procession for the thief
F A#
The men were restless and the women howled
Dm F
As they professed their grief

Dm F
A smoke was lying on his lips
A# C
And in his hand a rusty flask
F Dm
Even in death he'd forced a smile
C F
I oughta give him his dues for going out like that

Interlude:

F A# Dm A#
Dm x2 F x2

F
When you've walked through the valley
A#
Saw the face of death
Dm
And you've paid your debts
A# Dm
Well then, is there anything left
A# F
Is there anything left
Dm A#
When you've settled up
F
Is there anything left

F A#
I came to pay a false courtesy
Dm A#
So you couldn't get the best of me
Dm A# F
But the grief hung in the air and mingled with the sweat
Dm A# F
I presumed to know your inner workings, but I just wept

A# F
I never thought much about the man
C F
He was always just drifting along
A#
But a couple hours in
F
We were drunk as sin
Dm A# F
I was wrong, I was wrong about him
Dm A# F
I came around, I came around, I came around

F A#
I took you for a hanger-on
Dm F
But the way those folks all wept
F A#
You must've been doing something right
Dm F
To move the company you kept

A# F
The drinks kept coming and I loosed my tongue
Dm C
And I talked a little shit
F A#
But your friends just laughed and chimed right in
Dm F
Telling yarns so good it made me quit

A# F
I never thought much about the man
C F
He was always just drifting along
A#
But a couple hours in
F
We were drunk as sin
Dm A# F
I was wrong, I was wrong about him
Dm A# F
I came around, I came around, I came around

A# F
The room started reeling
A# F
I got the feeling I read you wrong
A# F A#
Then another bottle of gin
A# F A#
Break out the bar brawl again
A# F C
You were the reason for them

F A#
By the time the sun was at its feet
Dm F
Everybody there was pissed
F A#
And I can say with some degree of certainty
Dm F
The old bastard will be missed
A# F A# C
I thought your life was nothing more than one long grift
F Dm
Now I sit weeping by your coffin
A# F
Clutching a bottle in my fist

Dm A# F
I came around, I came around, I came around x 6
