Michael Hurley

Biography:

Michael Hurley is an American singer/guitarist, reportedly born December 20, 1941. He also plays the fiddle.

Hurley's debut album, First Songs, was recorded for Folkways Records in 1965 on the same reel-to-reel machine that taped Leadbelly's Last Sessions. He was "discovered" by blues and jazz historian Frederick Ramsey III, and subsequently championed by boyhood friend Jesse Colin Young, who released his 2nd & 3rd albums on The Youngbloods' Warner Bros.

[Verse 1]

E C#m
I had a glass of Knockando
A B E
Ah yes I really did
E C#m
the flames that lived, they were blue
A B E
as they recalled the red
E C#m A B
Had a glass of Knockando
C#m A B
This is what I said
E C#m A E E B E
You are the fire, the spirit fire, your soul is burning good
E C#m A E
can you hear the cracklin' fire
E B E
of the old pine wood

[Verse 2]

E C#m
Now everywhere that I may roam
A B E
I'm greiving all the while
E C#m
from the valley where I longst to be
A B E
I wander in exile
E C#m A B
Had a glass of Knockando
C#m A B
This is what I said
E C#m A E E B E
You are the fire, the spirit fire, your soul is burning good
E C#m A E
can you hear the cracklin' heart
E B E
of the old pine wood

[Verse 3]

E C#m
No can do what I dream of
A B E
in the dark and bloody ground
E C#m
No can do good for you
A B E
I'll see you all around
E C#m A B
Had a glass of Knockando
C#m A B
This is what I said
E C#m A E E B E
You are the fire, the spirit fire, your soul is burning good
E C#m A E
can you hear the cracklin' heart
E B E
of the old pine wood

[Verse 4]

E C#m
Go ye to the little black hill
A B E
go again you will
E C#m
enough for me, enough for you
A B E
and a glass of Knockando
E C#m A B
Had a glass of Knockando
C#m A B
This is what I said
E C#m A E E B E
You are the fire, the spirit fire, your soul is burning good
E C#m A E
can you hear the cracklin' heart
E B E
of the old pine wood
