John Gorka

Poor Side

by John Gorka
John Gorka

Biography:

John Gorka (born in July 1958) is an American contemporary folk musician. In 1991, Rolling Stone magazine called him "the pre-eminent male singer-songwriter of what has been dubbed the New Folk Movement.

Gorka was born in Edison, New Jersey. He received his first guitar as a Christmas gift, though Gorka alleges that his older brother stole it from him shortly thereafter. He eventually learned, instead, to play the banjo, and began performing in a folk music group at his church.

John Gorka - Poor Side

CAPO: 4th Fret

INTRO: G D Am D (2x)

G D Am D
Your dreams they have led to the poor side of town
G D Am D
Where you fight your way up to a hole in the ground
Em D C D
Your old friends don't pass, so you don't make a sound
Am C D
It saves you from saying, hello
Am C D
It saves you from saying, hello

G D Am D
You live the old saying that boys will be boys
G D Am D
But you aren't a boy, nor women your toys
Em D C D
Well then, don't bang your drum if you don't like the noise
Am C D
But you bang away and complain
Am C D
You bang away and complain

G D Am D
You've painted your shell, faked a smell like a rose
G D Am D
So they come within reach, but never too close
Em D C D
You are the one that nobody knows
Am C D
You let them think that they do
Am C D
Oh, you let them think that they do

G D Am D
That works for awhile, then they get their fill
G D Am D
Of the red-handed thief with his tongue in the till
Em D C D
Oh, you only love you and you always will
Am C D
The lines to the exits are long
Am C D
The lines to the exits are long

G D Am D
You found out too late that life is too short
G D Am D
Well, your ex-paramour hauled your ass into court
Em D C D
When you didn't pay for the child support
Am C D
And you always act like the man
Am C D
You always act like the man

INSTRUMENTAL: G D Am D G D Am D
Em D C D Am C D Am C D

G D Am D
People get more from giving, than looking to get
G D Am D
And that life you've been leading, it's leading you yet
Em D C D
There were lessons you knew that you shouldn't forget
Am C D
So now you are writing them down
Am C D
Now you are writing them down

G D Am D
'Cause your dreams they have led to the poor side of town
G D Am D
Where you fight your way up to a hole in the ground
Em D C D
Your old friends don't pass you, you don't make a sound
Am C D
It saves you from saying, hello
Am C D
It saves you from saying, hello

OUTRO:
G D Am D
Hello
G D Am D
Hello
G D Am D
Hello
G D Am D (8x - fade to end)
