John Gorka

Scraping Dixie

by John Gorka
John Gorka

Biography:

John Gorka (born in July 1958) is an American contemporary folk musician. In 1991, Rolling Stone magazine called him "the pre-eminent male singer-songwriter of what has been dubbed the New Folk Movement.

Gorka was born in Edison, New Jersey. He received his first guitar as a Christmas gift, though Gorka alleges that his older brother stole it from him shortly thereafter. He eventually learned, instead, to play the banjo, and began performing in a folk music group at his church.

John Gorka - Scraping Dixie

CAPO: 3rd Fret

INTRO: C G Am G F (2x)

C G Am G F
I heard he was scraping Dixie
C
Looking for a job
G Am G F
Looking for some work to get him by
C G Am G
Steering clear of all the jails
F
But he was skinny as a rail
C G Am G F
And his face would hardly move from day to day
C G Am G F
And his face would hardly move from day to day

CHORUS:
C G Am G
Don't you set your mouth on me
F
Don't you set your mouth on me
C G Am G F
Don't you set your mouth and jump salty as the sea
C G Am G F
Even though she was the one, even so, I'll overcome
C G Am G F
Don't you set your mouth on me like I belong
C G Am G F
Don't you set your mouth on me like I belong

C G Am G
He learned to cook short order
F
He was a pour man in a bar
C G Am G F
And a bubble dancer, 'til his face got steamed
C G Am
And I know that he was bugged
G F
Dishing out them slops and slugs
C G Am G F
He said that grease got all up in his dreams
C G Am G F
He said that grease got all up in his dreams

INSTRUMENTAL: C G Am G F (5x)

C G Am G
He said he'd be scraping Dixie
F
Maybe Carolina way
C G Am G F
Looking for some cash to pass him through
C G Am G
Oh well, what you gonna do
F
We all have to line the flue
C G Am G F
But I'll fight until they put that tree suit on
C G Am G F
I'll be fighting 'til they put that tree suit on

BRIDGE:
Am G C
A VFW from somewhere
G6 Am F
With the thousand yard stare
G
The VA kept him hanging on a line
C G Am
His disability was pending
G F
And I'd get these scribes that he was sending
C G Am G F
He'll be scraping by 'til the weather warms this way
C G Am G F
Scraping Dixie 'til the weather warms this way

CHORUS:
C G Am G
Don't you set your mouth on me
F
Don't you set your mouth on me
C G Am G F
Don't you set your mouth on me like I belong
C G Am G F
Even though she was the one, even so, I'll overcome
C G Am G F
Don't you set your mouth on me like I belong
C G Am G F
Don't you set your mouth on me like I belong

OUTRO: C G Am G F (## repeat 12x while humming here and there ##)
