John Gorka

Amber Lee

by John Gorka
John Gorka

Biography:

John Gorka (born in July 1958) is an American contemporary folk musician. In 1991, Rolling Stone magazine called him "the pre-eminent male singer-songwriter of what has been dubbed the New Folk Movement.

Gorka was born in Edison, New Jersey. He received his first guitar as a Christmas gift, though Gorka alleges that his older brother stole it from him shortly thereafter. He eventually learned, instead, to play the banjo, and began performing in a folk music group at his church.

John Gorka - Amber Lee

CAPO: 3rd Fret

INTRO: C G Dm Am G C

She never let her roots go brown
G
She kept moving them from town to town
Dm
Like she was running from a restless sound
Am G
That would use her name in vain

C
Back then she was the one to know
G
We didn't like it, but we loved her so
Dm
It broke our hearts to let her go
Am G
As if we had a choice
C
As if we had a choice
G
Oh, as if we had a choice
Dm
It broke our hearts to let her go
Am G F
As if we had a choice

C
With far too many brows to soothe
G
There was just so much to prove
Dm
On occasion, with the ruthless move
Am G
And the smoking overpass

C
Take it from one who tries
G
There's nothing friendly in the open skies
Dm
Nothing up there ever satisfies
Am G
The air is thin and cold
C
The air is thin and cold
G
Yeah, the air is thin and cold
Dm
Nothing up there ever satisfies
Am G F
The air is thin and cold__

C
Amber Lee
G
Back then we called her Amber Lee
Dm
We all landed in her way
Am G F Em
We called her Amber Lee___

BRIDGE:
F
Both a first and second wife
Bb
Unhappy almost all her life
A
The pain is sharper with a dull-edged knife
G
And the rust will lock you in

C
The highway is her habitat
G
She wouldn't cut it as a diplomat
Dm
She's not sorry that it came to that
Am G
But what's a girl to do__

C
They call her names, 'cause they think they can
G
You wouldn't hear them if she was a man
Dm
We're all flashes in a great big pan
Am G
And they're turning up the heat
C
They're turning up the heat
G
Yeah, they're turning up the heat
Dm
We're all flashes in a great big pan
Am G F
And they're turning up the heat__

C
Amber Lee
G
Back then we called her Amber Lee
Dm
We all landed in her way
Am G C
We called her Amber Lee___

OUTRO: (## repeat and fade to end, humming ad lib ##)
G Dm Am G C
