Gerry Rafferty

Royal Mile Sweet Darlin

by Gerry Rafferty
Gerry Rafferty

Biography:

Gerald "Gerry" Rafferty (16 April 1947 – 4 January 2011) was a Scottish singer-songwriter. In his early years, Rafferty earned money by the formerly illegal practice of busking on the London Underground. Poetically, his biggest hit, 1978's "Baker Street", discusses busking at a tube station and being a part of the street life. After working with Billy Connolly (now better known as a comedian) in an obscure outfit known as The Humblebums, he released his first solo album, called 'Can I Have My Money Back', in 1971.

Royal Mile (Sweet Darlin') – Gerry Rafferty
Submitted by John Daly

Am G Am
I remember the sound of the passing train
Am G Am
As it rolled through the night in the pouring rain
Am G Em C
And the touch of a hand and the way she said 'Goodbye'.

Am G Am
And we walked in the sun down the royal mile
Am G Am
Saw the light in her eye and the way she smiled
Am G Em C
And she cried in the night and I heard her say 'Don't go'.

F G C
What can I do, sweet darlin', I don't want to go away
F G C
Looking at you sweet darlin', I know I want to stay
F G
What can I do, sweet darlin'?

Am G Am
In the light of the day I was rolling home
Am G Am
I was thinking of you waiting on your own
Am G Em C
And I wanted to call but then something said 'Oh no'.

Am G Am
Yeah but now it's a dream, it's a memory
Am G Am
But I'll never forget what you gave to me
Am G Em C
I was lost and alone but you made feel ok.

F G C
What can I do, sweet darlin', I don't want to go away
F G C
Looking at you sweet darlin', I know I want to stay
F G
What can I do, sweet darlin'?
