Frog Eyes

A Flower In A Glove

by Frog Eyes
Frog Eyes

Biography:

Frog Eyes is an indie rock band from Victoria (British Columbia, Canada), The quartet is led by singer/guitarist Carey Mercer and is known for their highly idiosyncratic songs, which pit Mercer's unhinged, melodic vocals against a swirling mass of guitar, keyboards, and drums. Drummer Melanie Campbell (also Mercer's wife) notably uses a 'found object' as part of her drums set, the so-called "dinger." This object was only used on their first three albums and has since been disposed of in favour of a normal ride cymbal.

E F# x3

[Verse 1]
E F# B
'Cause you were always unnoticed
E F# B
You were always the flame that dies,
E F# B
Bastard with a flat-top singing, "The Cloud of Unknowing",
E F# B
Bastard with a flat-top singing, "The flame, oh never ne-ne-ne-ne-never dies."
E F# B
'Cause you were always unfocused,
E F# B
Jinxing the photograph with pain in your eyes.
E F# B
Bastard with a flat-top singing, "I will wait for your love, I shall wait for your love all days."
E F# B
Bastard with a casket singing, "I shan't wait for her love, I shan't wait for her love."

[Chorus]
E F#
'Cause you were always:
C#
A saint, a flower in a glove, a night made for the raising of your glass,
B
The night's going to be a foolin' and a foolin', and still: Judith ain't sure,
B C# D# C#
To-il aw-ay, pray in the sand, gross out your heart,
B
The night's gonna be made for the la-la-la, but still: Judith ain't sure.

[Verse 2]
E F# B
You were always unloading,
E F# B
Soft on the weight of your palm and your hand.
E F# B
Bastard with a passport to the old destinations,
E F# B
Bastard with a map of the palm of your hand.
E F# B
You were always: "Shut him out."
E F# B
You were always: "Shut, shut him out."
E F# B
You were always: "Shut him out."
E F# B
You were always: "Shut him out."

[Chorus]
E F#
You were always:
C#
Sun, Dash of White Light, a night that has passed,
B
Has passed into the records of all that the little record keepers fear,
B C# D# C#
Dear Mary-Anne, Bastard of Light, I swept your flax bang,
B
I swept into the currents of the river, of the river where Judith ain't sure.
E F#
You were always man, oh!

[Outro]
C#
Put your hand on my face, row away from the grief-stricken man,
Put your trust in my fate, I shall track that abrasive wasteland:
Bbm
We are richer in love, richer in love, richer in love but you know:
C#
You just can't have it. Whoa-ho-ho-ho! Man oh no no no no
Bbm
We are richer in love, we are richer in love, we are richer in love but you know:
C#
You just can't have it. Oooh-ooh-ooh-ooh.

B
