O grupo foi iniciado em 1976 em White Plains, Nova York pelo trompetista Duque Jones (que deixou a banda antes de suas primeiras gravações), o baterista Porter Carroll Jr., o baixista Clifford Archer, o percussionista e flautista José Phillips
