Lara nasceu em Newark, New Jersey, filho de imigrantes cubanos, mas grande parte de sua infância foi passada na Venezuela, de se mudar para Caracas com a idade de 7. Aos 8, ele dominou o cuatro - um instrumento de quatro cordas venezuelano onde se formou para a guitarra. Ele se mudou com sua família para Miami quando ele estava no colegial.
