Phil nasceu em 1973 em Auckland Nova Zelândia. Ele foi adoptado, uma idade de jovens em um início de cristãos. A primeira vez que ele pegou uma guitarra foi treze anos de idade... e pela primeira vez considerou como algo que ele queria fazer para determinados. Ele aprendeu a jogar, mas não fazer muito com o seu talento à primeira. Ele se tornou um cabeleireiro depois da escola de alto.
