Las Cafeteras, the dynamic L.A. son jarocho band, releases 'It's Time' on Tuesday, and it includes 'La Bamba Rebelde,' a timely take on a classic.

The new interpretation of "La Bamba" sung by the dynamic young L.A. band Las Cafeteras isn't your abuelito's version of the classic Mexican folk tune. Nor is it Ritchie Valens' 1958 hit rendition, or Los Lobos' smash 1987 remake.

This song is just Gm F C Dm all the way through (key Dm).
It's played on some strange Mexican instruments that I had never heard
of until figuring this tab out.
The 8-string used for the rhythm is a jarana jarocha with the typical
5 courses: single string, three double strings and another single,
tuned G C E A G but you can play the chords on a guitar or uke.
It's a down up 3 beat rhythm with a swing to the beat.
The 4-strings are probably jarana jarocha requintos tuned almost
like the guitar's 2nd-5th strings, except the B is tuned up a half to C.
It's a little easier to play that way but I've tabbed it standard.
If you tune A2•D3•G3•C3 like they do just play one fret down on the B-string.
The lead 4-string continues fingerpicking like the intro into the song.
He continues the solo into the last verse. Even a low-G tenor uke doesn't
go low enough to play the notes on the D-string, but you could pick out
the chords in your own way.
