Nascido em 25/08/1967 em Belleville, Illinois - Estados Unidos participou de 87 a 94 do Uncle Tupelo, formação seminal do Alt-Contry americano. Com o final do Uncle Tupelo formou o Wilco com o qual já lançou 7 albuns dentre eles os aclamados Being There (1996), Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002) e A Ghost Is Born (2004).
