Biografia:
Nascido na cidade de Nova York no dia 04 de abril de 1922, Elmer Bernstein resolveu dedicar-se à música aos 12 anos de idade. Estudou piano, e gradualmente transpareceu que ele tinha um talento nato para a improvisação. Logo atraiu a atenção de Aaron Copland, que fez com que o jovem estudasse com um de seus pupilos, Israel Sitowitz. Isto abriu caminho para que Elmer pudesse estudar composição com Roger Sessions e Stefan Wolpe. Elmer começou a dar recitais ao final de sua adolescência, e aos 21 anos, prestou Serviço Militar.
