Devin Townsend Project é apenas mais uma das facetas do músico canadense Devin Townsend
Depois da sua banda de metal extremo Strapping Young Lad, e da sua banda de Metal Progressivo, The Devin Townsend Band, Devin colocou a sua música em pausa e entrou num período de auto descobertas, em que ele largou a bebida e o cigarro, aprendendo como "compor sem drogas", então ele voltou a compor, simplesmente pegando na sua guitarra e escrevendo.
Num período de 2 anos, ele escreveu cerca de 60 músicas, de diversos estilos.
