Septeto informalmente liderado por Efrim Menuck (também guitarrista dos Godspeed You! Black Emperor), os Silver Mount Zion surgem em 1999 próximos da corrente pós-rock (um repensar de ideias rapidamente esvaziado de significado pelos desinspirados do triste carrossel instrumental), mas será provavelmente na experiência minimalista primitiva, na composição clássica e na música de câmara que encontramos os pontos de referência mais interessantes e significativos.
