Biografia:
Laurie estudou em Eton e em Cambridge. É filho de um médico ganhador da medalha olímpica de remo, e fez parte da equipe junior de remo de Inglaterra (1977) e Cambridge (1980).
Conheceu Emma Thompson em Cambridge, em 1978, e ambos fundaram a "Footlights". Em 1980 foi apresentado por Emma a Stephen Fry, com quem manteve durante anos uma frutuosa parceria profissional. Hugh é casado e vive, em Londres, com sua esposa e três filhos. Além de ser ator, escreveu um livro, um best-seller chamado "The Gun Seller" em 1997.
