A música do cantor/compositor J. Tillman pinta retratos lânguidos e tristemente lindos de amor e vida nas margens com a profundidade temperamental de Nick Drake e as texturas country de Ryan Adams. Tillman primeiro criou um nome para si mesmo enquanto tocava bateria em um par de bandas indie rock, Saxon Shore e Stately, enquanto frequentava a faculdade em Nova Iorque. Nas horas vagas, contudo, ele começou a escrever material por si só, citando a música de Nick Drake e Pete Seeger e os escritos de Flannery O'Connor como influências chaves.
