DIALOGUE WITH THE DEVIL by Bruce Cockburn

G A E
1. Standing on a rock, in a river.
G A E
Staring at the splintered sun.
G F C G/B
You could drowned yourself in jewels,
D Am7 G A
Like a thousand other fools.
E C G
While you stand there looking down at what you won.

G A E
2. Sitting on a mountain of ashes.
G A E
Face to face with past regrets.
G F C G/B
You could roll down to the canyon,
D Am7 G A
Piss away this incarnation.
E C G
But remember, that you pay for what you get.
E D E D
And he says; "Don't you know, how hard it is,
E D E D
to hit the ground, and mean it.
E D
And mean it."

G A E
3. Walk the jangling streets of the city,
G A E
Trying to find the buried sun.
G F C G/B
You could drowned yourself in jewels,
D Am7 G A
Like a thousand other fools,
E C G
While you wonder, waiting for it to be done.
E
And he cries; "Why don't we celebrate, why don't we celebrate,
G A
Love can make you sad, come on,
E
Let's drive ourselves mad."
E D E D E D
And he's aware, how hard it is, to kiss the sun,
E D E D
And mean it, and mean it.

G A E
4. Standing on a rock, in a river.
G A E
Staring at the rain, made one.
G F C G/B
On the surface, flashing diamonds,
D Am7 G A
Rolling down the twilight canyon.
E C G
And we shall kiss the sun, in spite of him.
E
So why don't we celebrate, why don't we celebrate....

(Repeat and fade)

(* Please note, this is only an interpretation for rhythm guitar,
the real version features intricate finger-picking that Bruce
is so well known for. MP)
