Bessie Smith (Chattanooga, Tennessee, 15 de abril de 1894 - Clarksdale, Mississippi, 26 de setembro de 1937) A imperatriz do Blues começou a carreira cantando em bordéis, e em 1923 foi a Nova Iorque para a sua primeira gravação. Bessie Smith ficou na história da música devido ao seu incrível senso rítmico e habilidade de improvisar em cima das estruturas do Blues.
