O Sisters of Mercy, considerada uma das bandas precursoras do gótico na Inglaterra, junto com o Bauhaus e com o Cult, nasceu em 1980, em Leeds, criada por Gary Marx e Andrew Eldritch. Uma guitarra, um amplificador de três watts e nenhum dinheiro, foi assim que a banda resolveu gravar seu primeiro single. Para facilitar criam a Merciful Release, e gravam o primeiro compacto, com The Damage Done, Watch e Home of the Hit-men. Lançam suas primeiras mil cópias.
